We are delighted to welcome bestselling author Diane Setterfield to the Festival to discuss her long-awaited, spellbinding new novel, Once Upon a River. Diane’s 2006 novel, The Thirteenth Tale, adapted for television starring Olivia Colman and Vanessa Redgrave, was a gothic masterpiece and her new novel is just as fascinating and haunting. Once Upon a River opens on a dark midwinter’s night in an ancient inn on the Thames. As the regulars entertain themselves by telling stories, the door bursts open on an injured stranger. In his arms is the body of a drowned child who, hours later, takes a breath and returns to life… At this special event, Diane will discuss her richly atmospheric new novel, her writing process, and the influences on her fiction, including Daphne du Maurier. In conversation with Dr Laura Varnam, (University College, Oxford).
